Andover Time Ring - Andover History

 

The Andover Time Ring is an outstanding piece of artwork featuring key historical events from the town's past, spanning more than two thousand years from Roman times to the industrial revolution. This remarkable mosaic forms a focal point of the recently refurbished the Andover High Street.
 

FJD a marketing and design company was commissioned to produce ideas and concepts for Andover Town Centre, The Time Ring was one of the ideas presented. FJD researched , designed and produced visuals for the Time Ring and found Alan Potter to produce the Time Ring in mosaic.   www.fjd.co.uk

 

Scottish-born artist Alan Potter specialises in art for public places.  10 mosaic panels illustrating events in the history of Andover. The panels are set in the ground in a circular clock face pattern.  The ten icons (see below) are made in unglazed porcelain mosaic. The rest of the work is in flamed natural granite. Each panel measures 930mm (top edge) x 1780mm (height) x 1690mm (bottom edge).  The whole piece is 7 metres in diameter and is flanked on either side by benches with granite block supports and Iroko hardwood seating and brass strips between the timbers.

  1. AD43 - The Icknield and Portway Roman roads cross at East Anton.
  2. 994 - Viking Olaf Tryggvason confirmed in Andover's church by Bishop Alphege.
  3. May 1st 1205 - Royal Charter granted to Andover's merchants by King John.

  5. 1435 - St Mary's church the main building surviving after the 'Great Fire'.

  7. October 18th 1644 - The English Civil War - a running battle fought through Andover.
  8. 1780 - Andover an important coaching town on the road to London.
  9. 1846 - The Andover Workhouse Scandal stirs the nation and Members of Parliament.
  10. 19th Century - Taskers of Anna Valley bring the Industrial Revolution to Andover.
