One of nineteen tapestry panels covering the
Borough of Test Valley
TOP BORDER:A
row of cottages at Little Ann: The cottage on the right with four
dormer windows, is Mallard Cottage, Group Capt. and Mrs Selby's
home from 1976; the Old Rectory: a splendid Georgian house, now a
private residence; three Virgins' Crowns in St Mary's Church: The
Eagle Inn; a row of cottages in the centre of the village. The
house with the white palings is the old School House, behind which
is the school.
MIDDLE SECTION: Alan Selby's design for
the middle section was a panoramic representation of the old houses
of Abbotts and Little Ann from the north. The white cottage near
the T-junction (of Mill Lane with Cattle Lane) in the centre
foreground is Brook Cottage, the Selby's home until 1976. Two
buildings in Mill Lane are Lower Mill and the Old Rectory. Opposite
the Old Rectory is St Mary's Church. In the adjacent water meadows
are six lime trees. The bright red building to the right of the
lime trees is the War Memorial Hall. On the extreme left of the
panel, by the side of the old Andover-Salisbury road, is the former
Poplar Farm. The main village road, Duck Street, is on the right
with the fork to Dunkirt Lane leading into the fields.
LOWER BORDER: This depicts the Pillhill
Brook and some of the wild life to be seen in the water meadows.
They include woodpeckers, hares, an exotic hoopoe and a heron. In
addition to various flowers, there is also a pheasant, a splendid
barn owl and a frog squatting by the brook. The panel's designer,
retired Group Captain Alan Selby, died after having finished almost
two thirds. Happily, his daughter completed it, incorporating her
own "signature" in the panel - a whippet, in the guise of a cloud
formation, to the left of the panel.
