The village, referred to as Celeworda at Domesday, is now in
two parts, modern Chilworth lying along the tree-lined, straight
'new' stretch of the Southampton to Romsey road, and old Chilworth
built around the 'old' road.
The pub called 'The Clump' is so named from an old earthwork
and the thatched post office was originally built as a kennel for
the local hounds before being handed over to the village in 1900.
The church, rebuilt nearly 200 years ago, is noted for its 800 year
old bells.
Nearby is the Chilworth Science Park, connected with
Southampton University. This is home for a number of firms who are
at the forefront in developing and using high technology
applications.
