Hazardous and Specialist Waste
Hazardous and Specialist Waste
While the Borough Council does not collect special or hazardous
wastes, here are some notes regarding disposal.
Asbestos
If you have to dispose of cement bonded asbestos (e.g. an old
water tank or old roof tiles) do not attempt to break or cut it.
Wet it first and then double bag it. You can take cement bonded
asbestos to the following local Household Waste Recycling Centres
(please call the sites in advance to ensure they have sufficient
capacity for this type of waste):
Scott Close Household Waste Recycling Centre
Walworth Industrial Estate
Andover
SP10 5NU
Telephone 01264 351421
Alternatively, please contact a specialist removal company -
yellow pages will have details of contractors.
Batteries
Car batteries can be safely disposed of at Household Waste
Recycling Centres. If you need to dispose of rechargeable batteries
for electronic items such as laptops and mobile phones, it is best
to contact either the manufacturer or the retailer for your
disposal options. These items cannot be taken to Household Waste
Recycling Centres or put in your domestic waste bin. Normal
household batteries e.g. those from your remote control, can be
placed in your domestic waste bin (but only in small quantities) or
taken to Tesco, Waitrose or Argos for disposal.
Tyres
To ensure that your tyres are dealt with responsibly they
should be taken to a recognised tyre company. Most national
organisations feed their old tyres into the remoulding, recycling
or disposal routes.
Halon Fire Extinguishers
All Hampshires Household Waste Recycling Centres are able to
accept Halon Fire Extinguishers.
Paint
Hazardous paint products (those with orange and black hazard
symbols), white spirit, paint brush cleaners, etc may be disposed
of at the Local Waste and Recycling Centre in Scott Close,
Andover (see above for address). This is the only one
site in Test Valley which accepts this type of
waste.

Valley which accept this type of waste, please click on this link:

Other Special or Hazardous Wastes
Other types of hazardous and special wastes (especially in large
quantities) will need to be collected and disposed of by a private
company. There will be a charge whether this waste is commercial or
domestic in origin.
If you have any questions or need advice or support in dealing
with other types of special or hazardous wastes, please contact the
Waste Management Section at Hampshire County Council using the
