Past Leaders of the Council

Since 1980, the Council has elected a Council Leader - the person who heads the largest political group represented on the Council.

The Leader is the most senior member of the Council as regards the Council's political administration (the Mayor is the Borough's civic and ceremonial head). Chairing the Council's Executive, the Leader leads the decision-making process, strategic policy and budget setting.

The Executive consists of senior Councillors who exercise the executive powers and duties of the Council over a wide range of matters.

The Leader is also a central figure in the Council’s relationships with Government and its various public and private sector partners.
