Be a Councillor

Would you like to be a Councillor?

Are you concerned about your local area and want to ensure that the community gets the right services and resources?

Do you want to make a difference and be involved in shaping the future of your local community?

Would you like to represent the views of local people and ensure that community interests are taken into account?

If your answer is yes to any of these questions, you may wish to consider standing for election as a councillor.

If our council is to be sensitive to the needs of the community, it requires councillors with a wide range of talents and interests who reflect the diversity of the population as a whole. Above all, they must be people who want to shape, direct and monitor the effectiveness of local services for the benefit of the people of Test Valley.

Councillors play a key role in decisions about policy and service delivery as well as in sitting on committees such as planning and licensing. Equally important is carrying out of work in the “ward” that they represent and resolving problems for constituents.

If you would like to know more about becoming a councillor and what the role involves, you will find the answers using the links on the left. You may also want to consider attending a meeting of the Council, Cabinet or one of the committees.

The Local Government Association is the national body representing local government and has lots of information which will help you understand what is involved. Visit their website using the link on this page.

For further information about the application process, please contact Test Valley Borough Council by emailing legal@testvalley.gov.uk  or elecreg@testvalley.gov.uk. Alternatively, please telephone 01264 368000 during office hours.
