Food Alerts

Food Alerts are the Food Standards Agency's way of letting local authorities and the public know about problems associated with food and, in some cases, provide details of specific action taken.

An example of an alert would be where a batch of food has been found to contain harmful levels of bacteria (eg. E.coli), a physical contaminant (eg. glass or plastic), or a chemical contaminant.

Food alerts may provide information about a product withdrawal by a business where food is removed from sale, or a public product recall where consumers are also being asked to return potentially contaminated food.

Local authorities may be asked to take action to ensure food is withdrawn and provide local publicity to the issue. Depending upon the nature of the issue, this action may be taken by either the Borough Council or County Council.

Businesses are advised to continue checking the Food Standards Agency website at www.food.gov.uk  for updates.
