Why do I need a licence?

To carry out house-to-house collections for charitable purposes you need a licence from the local authority.

What will I have to do?

Applications must be in the form prescribed by the local authority. You must be a fit and proper person.

What happens in the application evaluation process?

Your application will be assessed and may be refused for a number of reasons, particularly if there is a concern that an insufficient amount of the proceeds will be used for charitable purposes.

Will Tacit Consent apply?

Yes. This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from the local authority by the end of the target completion period of 40 calendar days.

What can I do if my application fails?

Please contact your Local Authority in the first instance.
You have the right to appeal to the Minister for the Cabinet Office.
Appeals must be lodged within 14 days of the refusal.

How can I make a complaint?

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the charity/organisation by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery).
