Since 2001, when Test Valley Borough Council purchased the
site, Rooksbury Mill Park has been transformed from a privately
owned trout fishery into a quiet lakeside space for local people to
enjoy and to improve habitats for wildlife. It is now managed as a
site for conservation and features important species such as water
voles, kingfishers and dragonflies.
The River Anton runs through the park and feeds the two large
lakes on the site. The Leisure and Wellbeing Service works in
partnership with the Environment Agency on the River Anton
Enhancement Plan as well as Hampshire Wildlife Trust and Hampshire
County Council, to protect the river for conservation and
recreation purposes. The site is an integral part of the Borough
Local Plan which aims to extend riverside walks and cycle
routes.
After major enhancements the park is now fully accessible for
wheelchairs and pushchairs and contains a car park which is
suitable for coaches.
Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and owners are
expected to adhere to the traffic light dog walking system which
operates on this site.
Lifebelts, which are inspected weekly, are strategically
placed around the site.
