Listed Buildings
Buildings and other structures of special architectural or historical importance, are given statutory protection by being listed. Listing is undertaken by English Heritage and buildings assessed against a set of national criteria.
There are three grades:
Grade I – Grade I buildings are of exceptional interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important; only 2.5% of listed buildings are Grade I
Grade II* – Grade II* buildings are particularly important of more than special interest; 5.5% of listed buildings are Grade II*
Grade II – Grade II buildings are nationally important and of special interest; 92% of all listed buildings are in this grade.
Within the Test Valley there are 23 Grade I’s, 98 Grade II*’s and 2122 Grade II’s.
Works that affect the character or appearance of a building, either specifically identified in the statutory list or otherwise protected as a curtilage building, requires listed building consent. An application for listed building consent should provide a description of the significance of the heritage assets affected and the contribution of their setting of that significance. The level of detail should be proportionate to the importance of the heritage asset and no more than is sufficient to understand the potential impact of the proposal on the significance of the heritage asset. For further guidance please see Planning Policy Statement (PPS 5).
For formal advice regarding any proposal prior to making an application please submit a Pre-Application advice form. This will allow us to visit the listed building and respond to you in writing with advice on your proposal.
For further information please see the following guidance notes.
