Village or Town Design Statements (VDS) are documents that describe the distinctive characteristics of their area. They are produced by local residents, in consultation with planners, and provide guidelines to developers on what they can and cannot do to a village/town. Its purpose is to help control development so that the village's essential character can remain.

The Council provides advice and assistance to Parish/Town Councils in their preparation of a VDS and, once completed, these documents will usually be adopted by the Council as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).
