Recycling Stars winner in the south

Poppy Evans from North Baddesley Junior School

The winners of Test Valley Borough Council’s Recycling Stars competition to design a poster for a waste collection vehicle have been announced.

Poppy Evans of North Baddesley Junior School submitted the winning design for the south of the borough, while Lily Jones of Endeavour Primary School was judged best in the north. The Council received almost 500 entries for the competition which took place in May and June.

Poppy impressed the judges, who included local councillors, council staff and Mike Sims, Head of Editorial at the Andover Advertiser, with her creative and colourful design. She received a surprise visit from the Recycling Star earlier this month to unveil her design and see her artwork up close. She also received a framed copy of her artwork, a Recycling Stars goodie bag and family tickets to the Hawk Conservancy Trust near Andover.

Environmental Portfolio Holder, Cllr Graham Stallard presented the prizes to the winners. He said: “I am so pleased that the children of the borough took on the challenge of designing a recycling poster for our waste collection vehicles. The variety and style of designs we received were vast and the judges really did have a difficult time choosing the winners! Seeing the designs on the sides of the waste collection vehicles is impressive and I hope that everyone will enjoy seeing them out and about and will be encouraged to recycle that little bit more. Once again, thank you to Poppy and Lily for taking part and producing two excellent designs!”

Judges praised Poppy’s entry for its bright, fun design and they especially liked the recycling superhero characters she created. Her design, which aims to encourage residents to recycle more and waste less, can be seen on the lorry that services the local area around Poppy’s school in North Baddesley.
