Amy Ellis of St Francis CE Primary School submitted the winning design for the south of the borough, while Olivia Sacree of Portway Infant School, won first place in the north.
The council received almost 350 entries to the competition which took place in October and November. The new designs aim to help encourage more people to recycle their glass bottles and jars.
Six-year-old Amy impressed the judging panel, which included environmental portfolio holder, Councillor Graham Stallard and several council officers, with her bright, eye-catching design. The judges praised her bold use of colours, catchy rhyme and her clear recycling message. Her design is displayed on the lorry that services the local area around her school in Valley Park. It will also be included on the back of the 2017 bin collection calendars sent to residents.
Amy received a surprise visit from the Recycling Star earlier this week to unveil her colourful design on the side of the waste collection vehicle. She also received a framed copy of her artwork, a Recycling Stars goodie bag and a pair of tickets to watch Santa Saves Christmas at The Lights.
Councillor Graham Stallard, said: “Amy should be really proud of herself. Her mum, dad and grandparents were also on hand to see Amy with her banner and they told us how she had done her creative recycling drawing as homework while on holiday in Cornwall.
“Once again the children in the borough have done incredibly well with their creative competition entries to design a new recycling banner for two of our waste collection vehicles. It was really difficult to pick the winners as we received so many excellent entries. I’d like to say a big well done again to Amy and Olivia for their winning designs and I hope that the vehicles will encourage residents to continue to recycle their glass, especially over the Christmas period.”
