Southern Water reduces flooding risk

Southern Water is to undertake works to reduce the risk of flooding in Andover High Street.

Test Valley Borough Council has made Southern Water aware of the problems faced by local businesses due to issues with Southern Water’s surface water drains in the High Street. On Friday last week, Southern Water informed the council that preparatory work is scheduled to start on Monday, 27 February with the main works starting the following week.

Southern Water will installing an additional surface water drains between the Guildhall and Shaw’s Walk to increase the capacity of the drainage system.

Planning Policy and Transport Portfolio Holder, Councillor Martin Hatley, said: “This is good news for the town. Some of the local businesses have had to deal with flooding issues for a long time, so I am pleased to hear that the problem is being rectified.”

Southern Water’s Project Manager Lee Hooper said: “We’re pleased to be starting work on this important project, which will bring long-term benefits to the area. We know there might be some impact during construction and we’re sorry – we’ll be doing all we can to keep this to a minimum.”

Southern Water are writing to the local businesses to inform them of the work.
