Test Valley’s Youth Sports Week encourages over 100 young people to try something new this summer

Over 100 children across Test Valley jumped, sprinted, served and pedalled their way through the borough’s first ever Youth Sports Week, held from 11 to 14 August, and they loved every minute of it.

From cricket and hockey to BMX and gymnastics, the week offered young people a chance to try something new, make friends and have fun, all while discovering the joy of being active.

Delivered under the council’s Active Community programme, the initiative aims to help children build confidence through sport, connect with local clubs and explore activities they might not otherwise get to try.

A total of 116 children took part in sessions designed to be inclusive, enjoyable and accessible to all hosted by seven local clubs, including:

  • Andover Cricket Club
  • Wellow Tennis Club
  • Romsey Hockey Club
  • Red Hot Gymnastics
  • Andover BMX Club
  • East Anton Cricket Club
  • Starlight Trampoline and Gymnastics

Councillor Terese Swain, Portfolio Holder for Community and Leisure, said: “Youth Sports Week has been a brilliant example of how we can work together with local clubs to create opportunities for young people to become active, discover new passions and build confidence. We’re incredibly proud of the enthusiasm shown by the children and the commitment of our community partners. We would like to thank all participating clubs for their time, energy and enthusiasm. Their support was essential in making the week a success and in showcasing the incredible sporting opportunities available across Test Valley.”

Each day spotlighted different clubs, giving children and families a chance to learn more about what’s on offer locally and many children left wanting to come back for more!

If you missed out this year, don’t worry! Youth Sports Week will be back in 2026 and we’re already planning to make it bigger and better.

In the meantime, Youth Sports Week is part of the council’s wider Active Community programme, which offers free or affordable sporting opportunities across the borough.
