Romsey Foodbank brings festive cheer with council support
Romsey Foodbank is helping hundreds of families enjoy a brighter Christmas through its much-loved hamper project, with an extra boost from a £1,000 from Test Valley Borough Council’s Councillor Community Grant.
The grant, awarded to Freedom Church which hosts the Foodbank, has supported three hamper making sessions from 16 to 18 December. These sessions gave households the chance to create a personalised hamper filled with essential food, festive treats, toiletries and small gifts for children and adults - items many could not otherwise afford.
Around 400 people are expected to benefit from the project this year. Families are invited into a warm, welcoming space where they can choose items that suit their needs and bring a little joy to the festive season.
Councillor Nik Daas attended the session on 17 December and praised the work of the Foodbank team and volunteers. He said; “It’s inspiring to see the care and effort that goes into supporting local families. Spending time with the volunteers and the families today really showed me how much this project means to people.
“It’s not just about food and gifts, it’s about creating a sense of dignity and choice, and bringing a little joy at a time that can be difficult for many. I’m proud that we can play a part in supporting such incredible work.
Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Phil North, added; “Community projects like this show the power of local support. The dedication and compassion shown by the Foodbank team is remarkable, and it’s clear how much their work means to local families. I’m delighted that the council can help strengthen this effort through the community grant.”
Romsey Foodbank supports people referred by partner agencies and signposts visitors to other services, helping those in need access wider support. The Christmas hampers are a valued extra for families during what can be a difficult time of year.
