Young people to help create new community mural for Chantry Street
Young people in Andover will have the opportunity to help create a new piece of public art in the town centre, following the submission of an advertising consent application for a community mural on Chantry Street.
The project, led by Test Valley Borough Council as part of Andover Vision, will bring together a professional artist and local young people to co-create a mural on a council-owned wall in Chantry Street, next to the existing Hendog artwork.
The project will give young people the chance to leave their mark on Andover while developing creative skills, confidence and pride.
Local artist Kezia Hoffman will work with young people from Andover Young Carers, Breakout Youth and Yellow Brick Road to co-design and create the mural. Through a series of creative workshops, participants will develop ideas for the artwork, with their experiences and perspectives helping to shape the final design.
Councillor Iris Andersen, ward member for St Mary's, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to be involved in creating something positive for the community.
"The Hendog artwork is a well-known feature of this area, and this project gives young people the chance to add their own creativity to the town centre while learning new skills and working with a professional artist."
The project will focus on engagement and participation throughout the design and painting process, giving residents and visitors the chance to see the artwork take shape and celebrate the creativity of local young people.
Councillor Phil North, leader of Test Valley Borough Council, said: "Public art helps tell the story of a place and creates opportunities for people to connect with their community.
"This project gives young people a voice and the chance to play a part in shaping their surroundings. We're excited to see their ideas come to life and showcase the talent and creativity of young people in Andover."
As part of the planning process, site notices will be displayed near the proposed location. Subject to consent being granted, the council will hold co-design workshops later in the summer.
