Community comes together for Great British Spring Clean at Abbotswood Local Nature Reserve
Abbotswood Local Nature Reserve is looking cleaner and brighter after fourteen volunteers from Wilder Romsey joined Test Valley Borough Council for a Great British Spring Clean litter pick.
Councillor Nick Gwynne joined members of Wilder Romsey and the local community on a beautiful spring morning, with glorious sunshine, for the event. Together they collected fourteen bags of litter in just two hours, including six nitrous oxide canisters which were safely removed by the council’s environmental services team in line with regulations.
There was a warm and positive atmosphere throughout the morning, with volunteers chatting, supporting one another and taking real pride in caring for a much‑loved green space. Everyone involved has given permission for their images to be used.
Wilder Romsey runs regular nature and conservation activities and continues to work closely with the council to support residents who want to play an active role in looking after their local environment. Their contribution at Abbotswood is the latest example of how community‑led action can create lasting benefits for people and wildlife.
Councillor Neil Gwynne, ward member for Romsey Abbey, said: “Getting stuck in alongside the Wilder Romsey volunteers was a real privilege. You could feel the pride people have for Abbotswood and how much this space means to the community. Days like this show what we can achieve when we come together, and I’m grateful to everyone who gave up their time to make a difference.”
The Great British Spring Clean encourages people across the country to look after the places they love. Abbotswood’s event is another great example of how local pride, partnership and a bit of sunshine can make a real difference.
The Great British Spring Clean is the nation’s biggest mass‑action environmental campaign. Each year, more than 400,000 volunteers come together to clear litter from streets, parks and beaches across the country. This year’s campaign runs from 13 to 29 March 2026.
