Grant helps protect historic home of much-loved Andover business
A long-established family business at the heart of Andover has received support from Test Valley Borough Council to help protect its historic premises.
Globe Galleries, located just off the High Street in Globe Yard, has been awarded an Andover Town Centre and High Street Shop and Frontage Grant of £1,782 to replace lead flashing on the roof of its building. The work will prevent water leaking into one of the property's upper rooms, helping to safeguard both the building and the stock housed within it.
The business has been part of Andover's retail landscape for more than 50 years. Owner Bill Evans, who was born in Andover, originally bought the furniture and antiques business with his father, Ellis, after a career that had included working as an estate agent on London Street and as an auctioneer. He had been a customer of the shop in the mid 1960s when refurnishing let properties. Today, he runs Globe Galleries alongside his son, William.
The premises has a long history. It was originally part of a coaching inn before becoming a public house. Around 20 years ago, the family was able to expand into additional sections of the building, creating the premises that Globe Galleries now occupies on both sides of Globe Yard.
Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Phil North, said: "Independent businesses such as Globe Galleries are an important part of what makes Andover town centre special. This grant will help preserve a historic building while supporting a family business that has served local residents for generations. Investing in the upkeep of town centre properties helps ensure businesses can continue to thrive and contribute to the character and vitality of Andover."

The building is full of character, but older properties need ongoing care and maintenance. We're very grateful for this grant, which will help us carry out important repairs, protect our stock, and ensure the business can continue welcoming customers for many years to come.”
The Andover Town Centre and High St Shop and Frontage Grant was developed by TVBC in collaboration with the Andover BID and Andover Town Council. Each project is led by the business, with the grant supporting improvements to enhance Andover town centre. This aligns with the wider regeneration plans for Andover, that include the new theatre and riverside park, aiming to increase footfall, supporting local businesses, and helping to boost the local economy.
These town centre grants are funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place, supporting local business, and people and skills.
