Picket Twenty Extension Public Art – Lead Artist

Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) wish to commission a heritage interpretation scheme for the new development of The Paddocks at Picket Twenty Extension development in Andover. The chosen artist will find creative and engaging ways to bring to life the important heritage of the site through public art and an education programme. The lead artist will also act as mentor to an emerging and local artist to support their experience of working on public art commissions.

The theme of the commission will be focused on the high value heritage identified through the archaeological evaluation and desk-based research which includes, ‘The presence of buried archaeological remains, relating to a probable prehistoric barrow cemetery within the centre of the site. The remains are expected to be relatively well preserved and are likely to be of at least regional importance’.

The outcomes of the project should include

  • A creative engagement project that will explore the heritage of the site and devise ways to share this heritage through the permanent public artworks and interpretation
  • Bespoke quality artworks and interpretation panels on the site of public open space, that demonstrate and bring to life the heritage of the site
  • A learning and education pack for people to engage with the heritage and the artworks created into the future
  • An artist mentoring opportunity for an emerging artist to gain experience of working on a live public art commission and be supported by the lead artist.

Lead artist commission fee: £46,000

Picket Twenty Extension Public Art - Artist Mentee Role

Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) wish to commission a Test Valley based artist interested in developing their skills and experience in public art commissioning to work alongside the lead artists for the new project at Picket Twenty Extension in Andover.  The main commission is to create a bespoke artwork, education pack and interpretation based on the high value and important archaeology heritage found on the site. This includes, ‘The presence of buried archaeological remains, relating to a probable prehistoric barrow cemetery within the centre of the site. The remains are expected to be relatively well preserved and are likely to be of at least regional importance’.

The role will be to support the lead artists in the community engagement work to develop designs for the project. You will work with the lead artist to understand the processes of developing concepts through to final design ideas and fabricated public artworks. This projects allows time for you to identify, discuss and respond to your own gaps in knowledge and experience through the mentee relationship. The aim is that you come away with a better understanding of your practise in relation to public art and with tools and techniques to support your own enhanced delivery of commissions.

Mentee artist commission fee: £3,000
