Lorna Taylor – Principal environmental health officer
I worked for ten years as an insurance broker, but became disillusioned working for inflexible financial services companies. I saw the role of Environmental Protection Officer advertised and still vividly recall ringing my now manager worried that my Environmental Sciences degree might not be sufficient without experience. I was thrilled when he essentially said please do apply. Since joining TVBC I have been supported and encouraged to gain wider experience and study to reach my goals. Almost 20 years later I now manage the team I joined in a junior role, and still really enjoy working here. The lovely atmosphere and helpful colleagues make an already interesting job more fulfilling.

I really appreciate the work life balance working here. Flexitime and agile working mean that you can fit what’s important to you around your work and I think we all give more when it is needed because we know what we do is appreciated and recognised by our colleagues.
As well as many short courses, ongoing training and professional development, I have been funded and supported with day release to complete a postgraduate diploma, a masters and a management course. My managers have always been supportive and encouraging to help me further my career and build my knowledge and confidence.
