Recycling Stars – competition winner announced (north)

The winners of Test Valley Borough Council’s Recycling Stars competition to design new banners for two waste collection vehicles have been announced.

The winners of Test Valley Borough Council’s Recycling Stars competition to design new banners for two waste collection vehicles have been announced.

Olivia Sacree of Portway Infant School submitted the winning design for the north of the borough, while Amy Ellis of St Francis CE Primary School, won first place in the south.
The Council received almost 350 entries to the competition which took place in October and November. The new designs aim to help encourage more people to recycle their glass bottles and jars.

Six-year-old Olivia impressed the judging panel, which included Environmental Portfolio Holder, Councillor Graham Stallard and several Council officers, with her bright, eye-catching design. The judges praised her use of colours, witty catchphrase and clear recycling message.
Olivia received a surprise visit from the Recycling Star earlier this week to unveil her colourful design on the side of the waste collection vehicle. She also received a framed copy of her artwork, a Recycling Stars goodie bag and a pair of tickets to watch Snow White at The Lights. Her design is displayed on the lorry that services the local area around her school in Andover. It will also be included on the back of the 2017 bin collection calendars sent to residents.

Councillor Graham Stallard, said: “Once again the children in the borough have done incredibly well with their creative competition entries to design a new recycling banner for two of our waste collection vehicles. It was really difficult to pick the winners as we received so many excellent entries. I’d like to say a big well done to Olivia and Amy for their winning designs and I hope that the vehicles will encourage residents to continue to recycle their glass, especially over the Christmas period. Olivia’s mum and dad joined nearly 90 boys, girls and teaching staff, all from year two, to congratulate her as she received her award.”
