New pet boarding business is top dog

A newly established animal boarding business in Rownhams has received a £750 Business Incentive Grant from Test Valley Borough Council.

A newly established animal boarding business in Rownhams has received a £750 Business Incentive Grant from Test Valley Borough Council.

Sydney Barker, who recently retired from a long career in toolmaking, set up Barker’s Boarding for Dogs in his family home and he is licensed to look after up to six dogs at a time.

Sydney said: “I want to thank the Council not only for the grant but for their support in providing information on setting up a licensed dog boarding business. I would also like to personally thank Rod Mason, the Animal Welfare Officer, for all his help. My wife and I have kept dogs for the past 35 years and we are so happy to have this opportunity to run a business centred around our passion for dogs. Barker’s Boarding for Dogs offers a friendly, home from home environment for all the dogs who stay with us.”

Chilworth, Nursling and Rownhams ward member, Councillor Bundy, said: “I am so pleased to present this award to Sydney, who has many years of experience looking after dogs. Many people prefer to use home boarding businesses rather than kennels, as the home setting can be less unsettling for their dogs. I have no doubt that Sydney’s business will be very successful and I wish him all the best.”

The £750 grants are available to anyone looking to set up their own business in Test Valley. Budding entrepreneurs should apply for the grant before they start their company and if it is still going strong six months later, they will receive the cheque.
