Transition Town Romsey’s plan for community energy group given backing by Romsey Future

A proposal by Transition Town Romsey to set up a community energy group in Test Valley has been endorsed by Romsey Future.

The plan is for them to be able to install and manage renewable energy equipment at sites across the borough and beyond.

It will be called ‘Dragonfly Power’ and already has the support of Hampshire County Council and Test Valley Borough Council.

Initially, the group will identify suitable locations where they can install solar panels on roofs of suitable schools and businesses.

There are also opportunities for groups like Dragonfly Power to be partners in the delivery of energy efficiency advice and initiatives to tackle fuel poverty funded by central government or other third parties.

The prime objective of Dragonfly Power is to install more renewable energy equipment across Test Valley, which would reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.

In 2019, both Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire County Council declared climate emergencies.

Anton Page, from Transition Town Romsey, said:

“Dragonfly Power is a new community energy company. We hope to install renewable energy equipment on the roofs of businesses and schools across the borough to help combat climate change. Climate change is a threat to us all so it is great that Romsey Future is endorsing this project.”

Councillor Nick Adams-King, chair of Romsey Future said:

“Romsey Future is excited to see what impact Dragonfly Power could have on renewable energy and the difference we can make to the environment at a local level.

“This a great chance for our community to come together and have their say on the way we use the energy system and do our bit for the climate. We’re pleased to endorse this project and look forward to following its progress.”

Romsey Future sets out a long-term vision for Romsey. It is an active partnership of many groups and organisations working together to deliver projects, attract funding, and to guide future policies and strategies.
