Andover’s creativity shines as families step into summer
Hundreds of families headed into Andover town centre on Saturday 25 July to celebrate the start of the school holidays as Step into Summer returned with a day of free arts, culture and creativity.
Organised by the Andover Network of Cultural Organisations (ANCO), the popular arts trail invited children and their families to explore venues across the town centre, take part in hands-on activities and discover the wealth of cultural experiences on offer in Andover. From archaeology and poetry to crafts, reading and music, the event brought together local organisations to create a vibrant celebration of community and creativity.
Families visited Chapel Arts Studios to contribute to a collaborative patchwork installation inspired by hope, explored Iron Age Britain through interactive experiences at Andover Museum, took part in craft activities at Andover Library and decorated crowns at The Lights theatre. A pop-up activity space at Unit 53 also offered opportunities for young people to try archaeology and creative writing activities.
One of the busiest attractions of the day was the Junk Orchestra at the Time Ring in the High Street, where children and adults alike were invited to make music using instruments created from recycled materials. The interactive installation transformed the town centre into a playful musical space, encouraging visitors to experiment, collaborate and create together.
Councillor Iris Andersen, who attended the event and visited activities across the trail, joined families at venues throughout the town centre and even tried her hand at the Junk Orchestra.
Councillor Iris Andersen said: “It was wonderful to see so many families enjoying everything Step into Summer had to offer. The event brought people together from across our community and showcased the incredible creativity, talent and enthusiasm that exists here in Andover.
“I especially enjoyed taking part in the Junk Orchestra in the High Street, which was a fantastic example of how art can inspire people of all ages to get involved, have fun and connect with one another. From music and crafts to history and poetry, there was something for everyone.
“Events like this are so important because they make arts and culture accessible to families, support our local organisations and create opportunities for people to come together and make lasting memories. Seeing the town centre full of activity and smiling faces was a real reminder of the positive impact these events have on our community.”
Step into Summer marks the beginning of a packed programme of family-friendly summer events in Andover, helping to bring cultural organisations together, encourage town centre visits and provide free opportunities for residents to learn, create and connect throughout the school holidays.
The success of this year’s event highlights the important role that arts and culture play in bringing communities together, celebrating local talent and creating welcoming spaces where people of all ages can take part, discover something new and enjoy shared experiences close to home.
