Work to create new accessible route for visitors to Charlton Lakes set to begin next week

A major improvement to Charlton Lakes is set to get underway next week, after Test Valley Borough Council approved plans for a new accessible route around the site.

Work is due to start on Monday 13 July on the circular path at Charlton Leisure Centre, which will create a fully connected route around the playing fields suitable for all users.

The project, backed by £310,000 of council investment, will deliver a three-metre wide surfaced path designed for walking, running, cycling and wheeled access.

Local feedback has shaped the new route, which will make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the space throughout the year.

At the moment, parts of the site can become muddy and difficult to use in winter. The new path will provide a safe, reliable surface all year round, supporting people using pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility aids.

It will also connect key areas of the site and link to existing paths and the Foxcotte Bridge, helping people move more easily around the lakes.

The improvements are designed to help more people stay active locally, while making Charlton Lakes more inclusive for everyday use and community events.

The route has already been welcomed by local groups, including Andover parkrun, which attracts thousands of participants each year and will benefit from a more accessible course.

The scheme was identified as a priority by residents through community engagement and forms part of the council’s Corporate Action Plan.

Lewis Jones, Event Director at Andover parkrun, said: “The new path work at Charlton is fantastic news. There are regularly more than 350 participants of all ages running and walking around the playing fields and lakes every Saturday morning at Andover parkrun. During the winter months the field gets very boggy and muddy and the parkrun becomes attritional, particularly for participants running with buggies. The new path will be a game changer and will benefit not only Andover parkrun, but the entire community.”

Councillor Phil North, Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, added: “This is a really positive step for Charlton Lakes and our communities.

“Residents told us that they wanted better, more accessible routes around the site, and we’ve listened. And as a regular attendee at Andover parkrun, I know just what a difference this will make for those users alone. I look forward to the new path being completed later this year, creating a more inclusive space for all residents.”

The council expects to complete construction by autumn 2026, creating a more accessible, safer and welcoming environment for residents and visitors. They will undertake the work in sections to enable the site to remain open throughout the project.

There will be a revised route in place for parkrun participants.

Local ward councillor, Linda Lashbrook, commented: “This new path is a great step forward for the site, and will make it easier for everyone to enjoy the lakes all year round, whether walking, running, cycling or using mobility aids.”
